Summary:
An orphaned boy, who grows up with his grandfather on an island off the coast of British Columbia, finds a key-literally--that helps him overcome his loneliness and loss.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers could use this book in a text set on people who live on islands to facilitate discussion on the special characteristics of islanders e.g. A Year on Monhegan Island, The Mermaid Summer, and Baby. Learners may want to chart the steps that Daniel takes to make a place for himself in the community and what support enables him to do so. A discussion of whether the mermaid was real or engendered by Daniel's loneliness and need, using references from the story, should prompt lively discussion and writing.
