Summary: |
Subtitled "Teaching the White Man's Way," this book chronicles efforts to "civilize" Native American children and youth in the late 19th and early 20th century. Archival photographs, an index, a reading list, a bibliography, and a list of web sites complement the text. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Aside from the historical significance of the events depicted in this book, teachers and learners may want to explore some of the social issues: were motives good, mixed, or evil? what happens to people whose natural ways and cultural customs are denigrated? did Pratt et al. do the right thing? ESL learners will certainly have something to say about cultural conflicts and cultural prejudices. Teachers could use the book with Stanley's Children of the Dust Bowl to compare and contrast education of minority groups using a matrix or a Venn diagram in preparation for discussion or writing. The Index of Native American Resources is located on the WWW at http://hanksville.phast.umass.edu/misc/NAresources.html. |
