HSE Descriptor(s):    social studies

Summary:
While prisoners in Teresienstadt (Terezin) concentration camp, Jewish women created a book of recipes of foods remembered. The introduction relates the fascinating history of this unique cookbook.

Teaching Ideas:
The book belongs in a text set on the Holocaust, perhaps paired with I Never Saw Another Butterfly, materials for which come from the same concentration camp. More information on the camp is available on the web sites below. Students could discuss or write about the role of imagination in extreme situations that enables people to cope. Although students may want to browse through the recipes, they will probably not "read" the book. However, the introduction is short enough to read aloud while students take notes for discussion. web sites: www.siscr.c2/ascii/terezin/, www2.judaica.org/pj/praguetour/terezin.html/
