Summary:
A true story is retold. Ishaq, a young boy in 9th century Baghdad, witnesses the "House of Wisdom," a cross between a library and an academy where books are shared and scholars come to read and exchange ideas.

Teaching Ideas:
This might be best for teacher read-aloud. The story is very interesting, and historical links are many, but the language of the book is uneven. Learners may be interested in the note, map, and timeline at the back of the book. Certainly issues related to how and why knowledge is shared (or not) among civilizations will be of interest.
