Teaching Ideas:
Although the story is told from a child's point of view and might, therefore, be considered childish by some readers, the story offers discussion and writing opportunities about how negative attitudes and values are acted out in children's play. The book could be taught with others on the role of minorities in World War II: Hunter's The Unbreakable Code and Passage to Freedom also by Mochizuki.
