Summary: |
This retelling of the Greek hero Theseus' journey to the island of Crete to slay the minotaur and his return to become King of Athens is magnificently illustrated in the style and colors that recall Greek pottery designs. Stylized maps decorate the end papers. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Use with a text set on Greek myths that includes Atalanta's Myth by Shirley Climo, Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliff, and Dateline:Troy by Paul Fleischman. Also research online to compare this telling of the Theseus myth with variations (Ariadne does not fare as well in some) perhaps using a matrix. Readers may want to keep a reading journal of the probem solving techniques that Theseus uses. Students interested in art will want to visit online museum sites to compare the beautiful illustrations with Greek pottery and with the Picasso drawings of the minotaur. |
