Summary:
This simply written picture book tells the true story of Henry Brown, a runaway slave who escaped to freedom by mailing himself in a crate.

Teaching Ideas:
This book belongs in text sets on African American History and the Underground Railroad. Students can use this as a beginning resource for research into the Underground Railroad. Students can trace Henry's route from slavery to freedom via a map or create a map of their own showing what happened to him along the way. Students can express in writing how it would feel to be shipped in a box and come up with a plan of action of what they would need to survive such a trip.
