Summary: |
This book tells the story of the "Hell Fighters," a voluntary infantry that was one of the few African American regiments to see action during World War I. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Excerpts or the entire book will enhance study of WWI. The book may also be a helpful reference for independent research projects. K-W-L would serve as a good organizer for the book. Students may also want to keep lists of new vocabulary they encounter while reading (e.g., "doughboy"). Some response activities will likely be necessary--Reading Group members were angry about some of the situations described. Teachers may want to compare this version of WWI with the different version presented by Michael Foreman. |
