Summary:
This book is mostly about the "Harlem Hellfighters," the 369th Infantry Regiment in WWI. This story is set in the larger context of the role of African American men in war prior to WWI.

Teaching Ideas:
Students might want to make note of where soldiers suffered prejudice vs. where they were treated with dignity. They might want to ask why, in the face of this treatment, men nonetheless volunteered to serve. Readers can compare these conditions to today's army. "Don't ask, don't tell" is currently viewed as prejudicial.
