Summary:
"Studying history is a way of snooping into the past." So begins this interesting book that focuses on childhood and adolescence in 1775--1800. Illustrated with paintings from the Revolutionary War period, the book describes education, work and leisure, dress, gender constraints, and so forth. The author includes Source Notes, Selected Bibliography, Further Reading, and activities focusing on the illustrations. The sentence structure and vocabulary are intermediate level, and the book is lively and interesting.

Teaching Ideas:
There are several books that would make a good text set for the classroom: Katie's Trunk, Paul Revere's Ride, and The Amazing Life of Benjamin Franklin. Learners will want to compare their lives with those of the children described, perhaps using a then-and-now matrix. The author's suggestions for "reading" the illustrations are excellent. Advanced students could research museum web sites to find other paintings by these artists or look for other artists from this period.
