Summary: |
When she was a young girl, Grandmother immigrated to America from Russia accompanied by her shadow. Together, they made a new home. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Teachers will want to think about how to introduce this book; some Reading Group members had "trouble" with the shadow. Learners may want to explore this through discussion or writing (e.g., What role does the shadow play in the story? Is using the shadow an effective choice? Why does the author focus on the shadow-- how is the shadow different from Grandmother? How and why do other authors use unusual characters-- Shakespeare's fools, for example?) The text would make a good "slice-of-life" addition to a text set about immigration. Another possibility would be to use the text as a springboard to collecting and writing oral histories. |
