Summary:
This is a most beautiful book focusing on the segregation practiced in the south during the 1950's leading to the civil rights laws passed in the 60's. The illustrations make the book come alive with details showing the inequalities practiced in every day life and of African American families and their dignity in the face of racial discrimination.

Teaching Ideas:
Easy reading choice for a civil rights text set or as an introduction to the segregation practiced in the south during the 1950's. Read aloud and invite predicitons/ inferences. Talk about the interesting 'twist' on literacy. Also talk about how Sarah Marie figures things out and why she talks to her little sister the way she does at the end of the story. The illustrations done by Colin Bootman could serve as writing prompts.
