Summary: |
Information boxes describing species of whales are distributed throughout this informative book on whaling. Archival photographs and journal entries lighten the expository tone and the glossary and bibliography make it more user friendly. The vocabulary level is appropriate for GED and pre-GED students. |
Teaching Ideas: |
A central text in a set on whales and whaling, excerpts of the lengthy book may work better than using the entire book. Students could use the Herringbone strategy to focus on the main idea and supporting detail of the excerpt. Small groups or individual students could research a type of whale, contributing to a class matrix of characteristics and location of whales. Teachers may want to read passages from Moby Dick since the saga of the great white whale is mentioned. Students could research the contemporary whaling of Makah tribe in Washington state and historical whaling using the web sites below.
