Teaching Ideas: |
Teachers who want both history to come alive and to speak to the issues of multiculturalism will find this book rich with possibilities. As part of a unit on U.S. history, Ketchum's book depicts the violence, greed, and hatred that has helped to shape the country. Students may want to explore this book in connection with current political issues in California, especially in regards to insiders and outsiders, the Californians and "others," or as part of research of Native Americans' plights especially the 1850 newspaper editorial on the demise of the Indian. Parts could be excerpted for use with other units of study--discrimination, frontier "justice," settling the West. Teachers may consider using the book with the PBS series "The West" or with immigration books such as Children of the Dust Bowl. |
