Summary:
The story of a family who fled from the Bosnian-Serb forces to a refugee camp in 1990. When they returned to their home in 1995 they found everything destroyed except 2 pet fish.

Teaching Ideas:
Other books for more advanced readers in a text set on political dislocation are Under the Sun by Arthur Dorros and Tree Girl by Ben Mikaelsen. Readers might want to create a chart to discuss the difficulties and decisions at the different stages: leaving, refugee camps, and return. What is the message of finding the descendents of Gleam and Glow? How do the illustrations help tell the story? The afterword might encourage some students to research more about the Bosnian war.
