Summary:
Jeannette Walls' memoir of her dysfunctional but vibrant family and the resilience and loyalty they exhibited.

Teaching Ideas:
Students could compare and contrast Wall's story with those of other well known people who came from similar circumstances. Jeannette was severely burned when she was three due to parental negligence. Should she have been taken from her parents? How would her life have turned out differently? Compare/contrast Jeannette's life in different phases--in the desert, in Welch, at college, in New York as an adult. This book would be a powerful read for adults in basic education classrooms - although teachers should be prepared to deal with students' reactions to Wall's portrayal of poverty, abuse and neglect.
