Summary:
This Newbery Award-winning novel is set in a utopian community in which all conflict and social problems are unheard of. After a coming-of-age ceremony, Jonas begins to interact with The Giver and learns about the secrets that underlie his perfect world. In the end, Jonas experiences something incredible and undertakes something impossible.

Teaching Ideas:
Several Reading Group members were disappointed with the ending of this powerful little book. There's lots to talk and write about here, though, such as issues related to personal freedom. Because information about the community is revealed so skillfully, comparison/contrast charts or perhaps occasional K-W-L charts may prompt readers' recall. Inference skills will be strengthened as students discuss/write about how and why life in the community will continue.
