Summary:
This is a very simple retelling of part of Alta Weiss's childhood. Alta pitched for the Vermillion (OH) Independents, a semi-pro baseball team, in 1907.

Teaching Ideas:
The story is told "in nine innings." Students may want to cast other baseball biographies into this format (or football into 4 quarters, etc. Krull's biography of sports heroes could be useful for this purpose.) This book belongs with others about sports, social issues, or women's issues.
