These I-remember-when stories are both heartfelt and instructive in terms of the personal side of history.

Teaching Ideas:
This book might make a good introduction to a unit on storytelling. Or readers could follow up the reading of this book by writing about their own connections (rendezvous with or memory of) with an important person. Teachers may want to augment this book by reading aloud (or assigning) some of the porch scenes from Zora Neale Hurston's books. For additional family history books, see the Family History Matrix.
