Summary:
This detailed account of the Montgomery bus boycott that began the Civil Rights Movement includes material on the leadership of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rev. Ralph Abernathy, but also focuses on other heroes like Rev. Robert Graetz, Joanne Robinson and the many ordinary people who walked to work for over a year to gain the freedom to ride buses and not be unseated or mistreated. As usual, Freedman includes archival photographs, footnotes, bibliography, and a comprehensive index.

Teaching Ideas:
This book joins the text set on Civil Rights, giving the details of the Montgomery bus boycott, considered by most to be the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. In preparation for discussion and writing, students might keep a reading journal or post-it notes to jot down: 1) how the non-violent resistance developed; 2) the ways the boycott leadership found to circumvent opposition (such as the car pools); and 3) the use of public gatherings to promote support, solidarity, and pride and to teach non-violent resistance. Why the bus boycott lead to the Civil Rights Movement makes an excellent topic for summarizing the material in the book.
