Summary:
The evolution of the acquisition, distribution, and consumption of food throughout history is described in interesting text and colorful, informative illustrations. The author includes a helpful glossary.

Teaching Ideas:
Sections of the book can be excerpted to use on a variety of topics. For example, The Amazing Potato could be used with the section Animals and Vegetables from the New World. Teachers may want to expand the vocabulary of the glossary with a list of British words e.g. "drover" for "cowboy." Since the book does not include maps or a timeline, teachers may want to extend classroom activities by creating them with the help of an historical atlas. The web sites below provide additional help. web sites: iam.classics.unc.edu/, homer.span.ch/~sprawl1241/atlas.htm.
