Summary:
Louis needs to write an essay but in Alabama in 1951, he's not allowed in the "whites only" library. Lewis solves his dilemma with bravery and the help of a kind librarian. Historical notes are included at the end of the story.

Teaching Ideas:
Since the book is about a boy who has to write an essay, students could choose topics to research and write about. The phrase "shaking things up" was used repeatedly in the story. Students could write about how they or others have done this.
