Summary: |
This is the autobiography of Antwone Fisher (basis for a movie made by Denzel Washington). Antwone's childhood was filled with emotional and physical abuse. He found a way to overcome this difficult beginning. |
Teaching Ideas: |
This moving memoir could be used in a text set on biography or on overcoming the odds with The First Part Last by Angela Johnson and You Can't Get There from Here by Todd Strassor. The difference between autobiography and memoir would be a good discussion or writing topic. Students might want to keep track of key issues that shape Antwone's life (teachers should note the sexual abuse scenes). The various parent figures might also be a good choice for closer examination, as may be determining Antwone's basic personality characteristics and how they were manifested at different points in his life. Follow-up study into issues related to foster care may prove interesting. Cleveland students will be interested in the setting of much of the book. Students will want to watch the movie. |
