Summary: |
This is a very compelling fictionalization of life for one teenaged girl, her family, and her friends during the yellow fever outbreak in Philadelphia in 1793. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Teachers may want to pair this book with Jim Murphy's nonfiction account in An American Plague, comparing the facts and the genre. Occasional log entries could focus on Mattie's concerns, for they certainly change over the course of the book. Issues related to who helps [and why] and who doesn't [and why] might be interesting for discussion or writing as are what makes a 'family,' how Mattie 'comes of age,' and the impact of the epidemic on society. Actually, this is such a gripping book that it would work well in literature circle format. Also, scenes could be selected for adaption for Readers Theater. |
