Summary:
This book tells the story of a young girl's encounter with the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson and of her friendship with the author. Although the picture book is a fictional account, Cooney's oil paintings and the afterword with biographical information about Dickinson lend an historical credence.

Teaching Ideas:
Because this book is historically accurate and matter-of-fact, the child protagonist does not make the book childish. The book makes an obvious introduction to Dickinson's poetry and might be used with the Dickinson chapter from Kroll's Lives of the Writers. However, since many students will not be familiar with Dickinson or her poetry, it is important that teachers introduce her writing first and talk about her life. Teachers may want simply to read the book aloud. Students may enjoy writing a fictional biography for another author they like. This book may fit into a unit on representations of authors' lives (along with Miller's Zora Neale Hurston and the Chinaberry Tree or Cooper's Coming Home). www.learner.org/catalog/literature.vvseries/uvspot/ Hughes.html
