Teaching Ideas:
The book lends itself to a study of family history, especially in rural areas where families may still possess family quilts. Teachers could do paper or cloth quilting activities in the style of the Foxfire books in which writing, pictures, and photographs are published as a group project. This book could be used in conjunction with Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt and Harriet Power's Bible Quilts. Individual sections could be excerpted for specific historic concepts such as the Underground Railroad or the home life of pioneers.
