Summary:
This extensive biography of the American poet and artist, E. E. Cummings, also conveys the history of the times, especially of artistic movements. Drawings, archival photographs, and segments of poems expand the biographical information.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers should note that Cummings' poems will be hard for struggling decoders and may work best if read aloud. Because this biography is long, teachers might use a jigsaw activity with small groups taking periods of Cumming's life and then sharing the information (including poems) with the class. Before the activity, students might choose categories for a matrix for gathering information such as time frame, geographical location, acquaintances, artistic interests, and activities. Writing a biographical sketch would be a good summarizing activity. Cummings' relationships with his parents, wives, and daughter provide material for lively discussions. Advanced students might enjoy exploring his visual style of writing poetry. To see more of Cummings' art work, check out http://eecumingsart.com and for poems www.geocities.com/soho/8454.eec.htm.
