Summary:
A 13-year-old boy, awed by hearing Lincoln make a speech, lies about his age to take part in the Civil War. He becomes a drummer boy and in this role experiences much of war's horror.

Teaching Ideas:
Learners may want to focus on the boy's growing understanding of war. They may also want to inspect the detailed illustrations for additional information about the war and life in the mid-19th century. This book will be an excellent easy-reading text for Civil War study. The art work could serve as a prompt for writing poetry.
