Teaching Ideas:
Use excerpts with study of World War II or other important events. Learners may want to consider the role of women in the times detailed and how their clothing reflected their roles. Learners may also want to keep track of interesting "tidbits"-- how "powder rooms" got their name, for example. Chart or matrix activities could be used to synthesize information about clothing at different times. Learners may want to follow-up by inquiring into designers' lives, whether movie stars affect people's self-images, or even speculating about clothes in the future. Learners may want to update the book by writing about fashions for the 1980s, 90s, and present. They may also want to chronicle their own family's history through clothing by describing, for example, what children and teens wear, what their parents and grandparents wore, etc. WWW information about clothing and fashion can be found at Yahooligans.
