Summary:
A beautifully illustrated, imaginative tale about why the Chinese celebrate New Year with firecrackers. A bereaved mother is helped by Buddah to thwart the New Year dragon. The author includes the background information for his created myth.

Teaching Ideas:
The book makes a good read aloud. Students could discuss and write about how they celebrate special holidays. This book could be used with others myths of how and why things started, using a matrix to compare and contrast this story with similar ones from other countries. Students could also look at books about storytelling to discuss and/or write about what makes good storytelling, books like Shadow Spinner, Come Go With Me, Drylongso, and Her Stories. .
