Summary:
Illustrated with lush reproductions of his paintings, this biography of painter Wayne Theibaud recounting his long career and late fame, is a story of perseverance from outside the mainstream. Thiebaud paints "things that have been overlooked," like food, especially cakes. Readers can learn a lot about art and how artists think in this small book.

Teaching Ideas:
To begin, teachers may want to ask students to comment on one Thiebaud painting, what they see, and what sense they make of it. The teacher may want to read aloud a few pages while the students listen and sketch. There will be plenty to discuss and to agree or disagree with here. As an exercise in descriptive writing, readers could choose a favorite painting and recreate it in words for classmates in turn ask them to recognize the painting from the description. Because Wayne Thiebaud continued to set goals for himself despite the lack of training, lack of an audience, and finally despite success, readers might discuss these goals and how he addressed them.
