Simon and his mother celebrate Christmas in the cardboard house they built for themselves. They offer to share the little they have with an old woman. Later, Simon sees a miracle.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers may want to tell students about the magical qualities of the book before using it so that no one is offended. This moving story would make a great read-aloud during winter holidays. It could also be part of text sets on holidays, homelessness, or urban living. Students may want to discuss or write about what makes a house a home. They may also want to predict the story using only the illustrations. An Eve Bunting author study is also possible. Holidays: www.worldtime.com
