Summary:
Subtitled "The End of Slavery in the United States," this book chronicles the U.S. Civil War with particular attention to the different times and circumstances in which slaves were freed. The text is sprinkled with excerpts from slave narratives, letters, and diaries. Archival photographs and other documents illustrate the volume. A timeline, bibliography, and index conclude the book. The power of the narrative and of individual journals and diaries bring the human perspective to history.

Teaching Ideas:
This is a Civil War book with a difference-- the basics of the war are described, but the addition of the 'jubilees' and the focus on lives of the slaves will make it a welcome addition to study of the Civil War. Students may want to keep track of the 'jubilee' dates as they read and then speculate about the reasons for the differences. Students may also want to do inquiry projects related to interesting people or events from the book. Some students may be interested in reading more slave narratives, for example. A Yahooligans search on "U.S. Civil War" will yield many appropriate WWW sources.
