As with all folk tales, teachers will want to establish the context for reading the book before sharing it with learners. Possible topics for discussion include competition/contests, the men vs. the woman, and tricks and foolery. Learners may want to pay special attention to the illustrations, perhaps speculating on why they won notice from the Caldecott committee.
