General Information:
Book Type(s):    fiction, linked story

HSE Descriptor(s):    social studies

Summary:
The author tells the heartbreaking story of a young boy growing up as an undocumented migrant whose family traveled the crop circuit in California in the 1930's. The narrative is told as linked stories. At least two of the chapters have been published as separate books.

Teaching Ideas:
If the book is used in a text set on migrant workers, students could compare and contrast the experiences of the young boy in Calling the Doves by Juan Herrera and the boy in Tomas and the Library Lady by Pat Mora using a Venn diagram or a matrix. As an extension, learners may want to research U.S. immigration laws and current issues of illegal immigration. Because the sparse, moving style lends itself to poetry, teachers might ask students to pick an image in one chapter and write a poem around it.
