Teaching Ideas:
Teachers should be sure to draw students' attention to the photographs, which carry the stories in some places and help readers figure out who's who in others. This is a great book to encourage students to write their own family histories. Many parts of the book could be excerpted to go with other units--work, community, family, generations, Great Migration, World War II. Comparison-contrast across the generations might prove fruitful, e.g., work, play.
