Summary:
Freedman describes the impact of the Great Depression on the youth of that time. Topics include the struggles youth had staying in school and finding jobs and what youth did to help their families survive. Photographs by well known photographers accompany the text.

Teaching Ideas:
Students could use books listed in the bibliography to explore the topic further. Students could interview friends or family members who lived during the depression. A compare and contrast could be done between the Great Depression and a recent economic downturn. Some lessons on simple economic concepts could be taught.
