Teaching Ideas:
This book could be used in tandem with a text set on epidemics--Invisible Enemies, Fever 1793, and Plague Year to explore epidemics, especially HIV/AIDS. However, the social issues exemplified in the changing lives of Chanda, her family, neighbors and friends need to be explored--poverty, alcoholism, social ostracism, class distinctions, health care, and community responsibility. Readers should keep a journal while reading to develop questions, responses, and predictions to be discussed later. Journal notes would be particularly helpful in noting the development of Chanda's character and how she faces problems and tries to solve them. The publisher has devoted an extensive web site to explore the book with a helpful glossary, resources, biographical information about the actor/playwright/author and lesson plans at www.annickpress.com/forteachers/chandassecrets.html.
