Summary: |
Each of the 11 chapters of this fascinating look back at the 20th century focuses on a different topic: war, immigration, transportation, politics, religion, the environment, etc. Each chapter is written by a noted young adult author. Several different types of writing are used, including personal memoirs and subjective essays. The result is an interesting and readable mix. |
Teaching Ideas: |
Competent readers will be able to read the book independently; others will need teacher assistance. The book should probably be excerpted for use in other units, though 'life in the 20th century' would be a fascinating topic for the integration of all instruction, most likely for several months. Students could develop a timeline as they read. Lots of inquiry extensions are possible. Students or teachers may want to select a topic and then search the Tradebooks collection and/or the Internet to find additional resources. Individual chapters will provide excellent models for teachers who want to focus on the essay as a genre. |
