Summary: |
A young girl wanders the streets of Charleston from sun up to sun set capturing the vendors' calls and the sounds of the street. The book begs to be read aloud. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The author's note at the end of the book gives other sources of "shouts" including Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, some of which could be played in class. Students could expand the search to jump rope rhymes, "dozens," slavery spirituals with coded lyrics, and other forms from the oral tradition. As an introduction to poetry, a class might want to go outside to listen to sounds, to develop a beat for one, and then lyrics for the beat. |
