Teaching Ideas:
The book adds a personal story to the text set on the Holocaust. It would also be a strong addition to text sets on WW II (see the World War II Matrix), family history (see the Family History Matrix), or "ordinary" heroes. Prediction activities would work well while reading and after. What happened after Sevrine and her parents separated? What happened to Pere Voulliard? What was Sevrine like as an adult? The butterfly of the title suggests a discussion of the symbolism, especially in conjunction with I Never Saw Another Butterfly. Other topics for discussion or writing include characteristics of a hero, when and why one resists, and whether the mother put her family in unnecessary danger. Be sure to look at Polacco's web site for more biographical information and her other books.
