Summary:
With the help of detailed photographs, the author describes how historical fact is established by excavating and reconstructing the volcanic site of Pompeii.

Teaching Ideas:
Readers would benefit by creating a timeline of events at Pompeii before writing a summary. Brainstorming and semantic mapping would help readers explore the many ways that historical events are established. Students might want to compare and contrast the two different methods of making plaster casts of Pompeian victims and the reason they are necessary. Because the photographs of victims are so vivid, readers might want to choose one character and write an imaginary journal entry of the events of the volcanic eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.
