Summary:

Teaching Ideas:
The wide-ranging effects of such a natural disaster will surely provide lots of possible extensions for further study. For example, students may want to compare the occupation of meteorologist in the 1880s and today. Another natural connection would be to compare a weather emergency from today (e.g., floods, wildfires) with the situation in 1888.
