Teaching Ideas:
Pair these poems with those of Arnold Adoff's All the Colors of the Race and Thomas's Brown Honey and Broomwheat Tea. Readers can experiment with poems about the color of their skin. The poems encourage discussion of attitudes toward skin color between races but also within racial communities. Thomas's poetry always provides opportunities to explore uses of sound and metaphor in poetry.
