Summary:
This book tells about the life of a rodeo-riding African American cowboy. The book ends with a two-page history of Black cowboys.

Teaching Ideas:
For map work, students can find all the states where Pickett performed. Teachers may want students to learn the special vocabulary of rodeo life (i.e., bulldogging or grand standing) or tie the book to a unit on Texas or on cowboys. Teachers may ask students to write a list of other strange and unusual sports, choose one, and describe it in several paragraphs. The book may fit with other stories of people who were first at a sport or at some accomplishment or as part of a unit on folk heroes, with say, John Henry. Teachers may want to take care that students don't feel patronized since the story could be interpreted as childish.
