Summary:
Big Annie is the story of Annie Clemenc who led the miners' strike of 1913 in Calumet, Michigan against the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company. The book contains many photographs of the strike and conditions in the mines and a brief overview of the Industrial Revolution and the beginning of the Labor Union Movement.

Teaching Ideas:
Teachers may want to brainstorm a "workers' bill of rights" with learners so that they can keep a journal as they read the book. The book suggest many topics for Discussion Web strategies. For example, had the strikers won or lost when the strike was settled? Students may want to take sides and debate the issues of the strike. They may also enjoy describing Big Annie from the point of view of the striking miners or from James McNaughton's. For more information on the Labor Union Movement look at these web sites: www.socialstudieshelp.com/Eco_Unionization.htm and www.theholidayspot.com/laborday/labmovement.htm.
