Summary:
A bear with magical powers raises a foundling who grows up to marry a princess, fulfilling an old prophecy. An Afterword directs the reader to sources for the tale.

Teaching Ideas:
The book makes a good addition to a text set on tales. Teachers will want to use the Afterword to discuss the contributions of the tales of Snow White, Moses, and Romulus and Remus. Students could compare and contrast Bearskin with these tales using a Venn diagram. Students may notice and want to discuss the multicultural community depicted in the illustrations. Would you like to live in such a community? Why or why not? The story also provides opportunity to look for characteristics of storytelling like repetitions and predictability. web sites: www.gospelweb.net/biblestoreisforyouths.htm#MosesonNile, www.pitt.edu/~dash/type0709.htm#snowwhite, library.thinkquest.org/11402/romulus_and_remus.html
