Summary: |
Endangered species are bred in captivity and taught survival skills before being returned to their native habitat. Animals singled out for special note are the red wolf, the black-footed ferret, the golden lion tamarin, and lemurs. Beautiful color photographs document the well written expository text. |
Teaching Ideas: |
The material on the red wolf could be excerpted and used with Journey of the Red Wolf, Red Wolf Country, and Wolves. The Herringbone strategy would work well with the expository style and subordinated details. A Discussion Web strategy could be used to highlight the pros and cons of the issues of expense and success rate of breeding and release programs for endangered species. The book could be extended with a field trip to a local zoo and/or a study of the genetics of inbreeding.
