Summary:
This picture book tells the story of the first family to settle in Aurora, Ohio and offers a glimpse of the hardships they willingly endured and of the support of their neighbors.

Teaching Ideas:
This book fits well in an Ohio history unit (with Fleishman's The Borning Room, Hendershot's two books and Hamilton's The Bells of Christmas). It also belongs in a unit on community spirit and communal support, along with books such as Levine's Pearl Moscowitz, Fisher's Kinderdike, and Cooney's Miss Rumphius. Among other things, students could discuss the hardships faced by the pioneers as well as the use of soft watercolors and the effect they make on the tone of the book.
