Summary:
During the late 15th century, explorers sailed a relatively unknown world in search of gold and spices. By turns ambitious and cruel, these explorers changed the map of the world in 100 years. The book includes many maps, notes, a bibliography, and an index.

Teaching Ideas:
This book may be used in a text set on exploration or individual chapters can be excerpted successfully. Students could document their reading with a matrix chart of the personalities and exploits of the navigators--who, when, where, who sent, what was discovered, etc. The book highlights the role of mapmakers which could lead to an interesting discussion. Because the book does not contain a glossary, students might want to construct one. Some readers thought that illustrations were occasionally childish.
